Rain Gear Hacks: Plastic Bags vs GoreTex Socks

(NOTE: this article originally appeared in WITW International’s November/December 2020 edition of Shootin’ The Breeze)

This is a great article from Adventure Rider discussing the pros and cons of various wet-weather riding gear.

“Riding Ecuador last year, I hit some nasty weather that continued for days on end. When it rains for an afternoon or a day, it’s no big deal, even if you don’t have good rain gear. But when it pours for a week without blue skies in sight, it’s suddenly a lot less fun, especially if you’re at high altitude and colder climates.”

I’ve been caught in my fair share of downpours — riding through Sri Lanka, for example (see below for a photo from my 2014 trip) — and have had to try and outrun tornadoes in May (earlier the same year) across the Oklahoma and Arkansas plains (talk about a drenching!).  One must always, always, always be prepared for poor weather — and I think the ADV Rider author has convinced me to get a rain onesie 😉
